Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
There was a time, slightly over a hundred years ago, when one could actually be tempted to love the world. Technology was changing the world with automobiles and airplanes. It was thought that there was little else to learn as science had made so many advances in knowledge. Attitudes were progressing away from stodgy Bible thumping churches. Life was good.
We all know what followed. The “War to end all wars” nearly destroyed Europe. Engineers built a ship out of iron and then were shocked when the Titanic sank. The Spanish Flu epidemic killed 50 million people. Avarice and greed increased until the end of the 20’s when everything crashed and the Depression began. It became very hard to love the world.
Today, technology has changed the world again, tracking our every move. Artificial Intelligence promises to encroach even further. The Covid-19 pandemic has killed millions. Civil discourse has eroded to the point that disagreeing with the collective is deemed a “phobia” and must be silenced. Nothing the flesh desires is out of reach in this new world. It is really hard to love this world but many still do.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to live in this world with a Biblical worldview and not see that this ship is made of iron with granite lifeboats. It is past time that the love of the Father flowed through us and into the world. Do not love the world…
Love your neighbor.
